John W. Hoyt MD, FCCM
Summary
Dr. John Hoyt has been an active leader in the evolution of critical care medicine at the national level for 30+ years and to this day takes pride in remaining active as a “hands on” intensivist continuing to practice at the bedside. In his role with the Intensivist Company and Pittsburgh Critical Care he continues to shape the face of critical care today in assisting hospitals who want to develop intensivist programs and in managing intensivist services for hospitals that want to be Leapfrog compliant. Dr. Hoyt established his first intensivist service in 1976 at the Naval Regional Medical Center in Portsmouth, Virginia. He went from there to the University of Virginia and then St. Francis Medical Center where he established intensivist services.
With multiple endeavors in starting up new intensivist programs as an ICU Medical Director, Dr. Hoyt was an early adaptor in the use of information technology to improve the care of ICU patients. He installed computer systems at NRMC Portsmouth, U. Va. and St. Francis. He is now actively involved in current platforms with integrated electronic medical records in the ICU. He has evolved an ICU census program that has a severity of illness scoring system to risk adjust for patient outcome. That system is used in a variety of hospitals to track the outcome of patients after starting an intensivist program. His knowledge and experience resulted in his involvement with the Society of Critical Care Medicine in developing Project Impact, an ICU database to describe the quality of patient care. Dr. Hoyt served 12 years on the SCCM Council and served as President of SCCM in 1996.
Dr. Hoyt’s willingness to don scrubs and a stethoscope in the building of a new intensivist program brings an approach seldom found in the consulting world. With optimizing patient care and access to care as a focus in his methodology, the clients of PCCA and The Intensivist Company have realized overwhelming acceptance of their intensivist programs and sustained measurable results in a fraction of the time reported for other programs. His circle of influence and leadership style embraces all levels of hospital staff and caretakers including clinical and non-clinical, medical staff, and hospital executives.
